Online sports betting has been legal in Ohio since January 2023 after legislation was passed to implement regulations to oversee the licensed betting platforms. As a result, wagering on sports through computers and mobile devices is legal within the state borders – even to non-residents – but requires bettors to have registered with one of the approved sportsbooks, of which there are now 20.

In order to place an online sports wager in Ohio, bettors must be at least 21 years of age.

Sports Betting Winnings are Taxable in Ohio

Winnings from online sportsbooks are deemed taxable at a federal level, so the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires each individual to report and pay tax on all of their gambling winnings, including amounts won by online sports betting. These sums should be reported as “Other Income” on IRS Form 1040, with the rate an individual pays being based on their annual earnings.

Ohio also imposes a tax on winnings from sports betting based on an individual’s income:

IncomeTax Rate
Under $22,1500%
$22,151-$44,250$316.18 + 2.85% on income above $22,150
$44,251-$88,450$946.03 + 3.326% on income above $44,250
$88,451-$110,650$2416 + 3.802% on income above $88,450
$110,651-$221,300$3260.16 + 4.413% on income above $110,650
Above $221,300$8143.14 + 4.797% on on income above $221,300

In addition to all of the above, the sportsbooks themselves are also taxed by the state at a flat rate of 20% of their adjusted gross revenues, which is met by bettors either through adjusted odds or reduced winnings.

Responsible Gambling In Ohio

Bonus Bet USA supports Fun, Safe & Responsible Gambling. Head to our Responsible Gambling page for more information and links to resources which could be helpful. Gambling and sports betting are designed purely for fun and entertainment, but when they escalate to harmful levels, severe repercussions can follow. In essence, any gambling that negatively impacts your personal or work life constitutes problem gambling.

The notion of responsible gambling encourages secure, controlled, and lawful gambling experiences while reducing the potential harm to individuals, families, and society. The saying “too much of a good thing can be detrimental” is definitely applicable to gambling.

Signs of Problem Gambling

Several warning signs indicate problematic gambling behaviour, such as:

  • Frequently daydreaming about gambling or betting strategies
  • Increasing bets to achieve the thrill of excitement
  • Wagering money not designated for entertainment or money you cannot afford to lose
  • Feeling irritable, anxious, or annoyed when ceasing gambling activities
  • Engaging in illegal activities to support or fund gambling
  • Taking loans to finance gambling
  • Attempting to recover lost funds by placing larger bets
  • Deceiving friends, family, and colleagues about the extent of your gambling

However, the most significant and telling sign of excessive gambling is the inability to stop or reduce it despite attempts to do so. In addiction terminology, this is referred to as acting “without your own permission.”
