BetRivers Sportsbook Review

betrivers

Introduction

BetRivers are not rookies in the world of sports betting by any stretch but their official launch, in June 2020, means they are relative newcomers compared to some of the industry’s grizzled veterans.

They are part of the Rush Street Interactive group, formed in Chicago in 2012 and which owns sportsbooks and casinos all over the US, including the  SugarHouse Sportsbook – a sister company to BetRivers.

To give you some idea of how big RSI are, they the considered the fourth-biggest US operator of online casinos and sports betting and are also active internationally. Along the way they have collected several awards … so if you’re impressed by trophies and awards, BetRivers may be the place for you.

But are said awards justified? Did anyone else even enter?

As with most sportsbooks, there are good parts and not-so-good parts to what BetRivers have to offer. So, let me tell you what I think…

BetRivers State Availability

BetRivers are not nationwide by any means – as we know, that’s an impossibility – but there are 15 states in which you can sample their delights. Plans are, of course, afoot for this to change and it’s a list that grows year-on-year but for now they are only available in just over a quarter of the US.

If you live in one of the states where BetRivers are authorized to operate then it’s all good – and we’ll come onto those in a bit – but in terms of registering for a BetRivers account, well you can do that from anywhere in the world, along with checking your transaction history, depositing funds etc

The ability to bet, or more specifically where you bet from, is managed by some geo-comply software that verifies your location, which automatically downloads when you bet from an Apple device or computer. And it works, so there’s no way round it. Sorry.

It goes without saying – but I’m going to say them anyway – but the usual Ts & Cs apply and you have to place a bet in the ‘legal’ states.

As mentioned above, the list of legal BetRivers states will continue to grow in the coming months and years but for now:

  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia

In addition to the above, the good folk of Ontario, Canada can also legally access BetRivers.

Sign Up Process

So, you’ve decided that BetRivers is your sportsbook of choice – at least one of them – but you don’t have an account. What’s next?

Well, allow me to take you through, step-by-step, what you need to do to rectify that situation.

First up, you need to either head to the BetRivers Sportsbook website or, alternatively, download the BetRivers mobile app.

From there you need to find the ‘Join Now’ option and click. If you’ve done it right it will look something like this…

Your sign-up process is up and running!

First you have to select the state from which you will be gambling, at least initially, and then choose a screen name, input your email address and then create a password.

Once that’s all done, hit ‘continue’ and you’ll be magically transported to a new screen where you will be asked to enter the following:

  • Full name
  • ZIP code
  • Street address
  • Date of birth
  • Gender

All standard stuff, and unsurprisingly the next thing you are asked for is to pick and provide answers for some security questions before adding your cell phone number and the last four digits of your social security number.

You’ll then be asked to agree to their Ts & Cs – standard stuff again – and then are given the chance to add an extra layer of account authentication, which we recommend you do.

Before signing into BetRivers, you will be asked to agree to their terms of service before having the option to add the extra layer of account authentication. I recommend you do … why wouldn’t you?

You’re now in a place where you can finally deposit funds into your account and away you go!

The process is nearly complete but there is just one minor hurdle to overcome before you’re fully aboard…

Account Verification

When (not if) you win your first bet, BetRivers will need to verify you are who you say you are before releasing your winnings, which is fine as long as you are who you say you are and are not pretending to be someone else!

The reasons for doing so are obvious … preventing underage gambling, preventing a person having multiple accounts, criminal activity etc etc

They offer you several different options for this identity verification:

  • Driver’s License
  • State ID Card
  • Passport
  • Voter ID Card
  • City/State Employee Card
  • Birth Certificate
  • University ID Card

They will also ask you for proof of your address, and any of the following will do:

  • Bank Statement
  • Mortgage Statement
  • Tax Statement
  • Utility Bill

All fairly standard stuff and, while some see it as a pain in the ass, it’s all done for the right reasons as mentioned above and, besides, it is federal law in the US for all  online gambling operators who earn $1million or more in revenue to go through this process with each of their customers. And if it helps prevent money laundering and fraud prevention, then it’s worth it, right?

Payment Options

BetRivers have matched the big players with a decent suite of options and, as you would expect of a book that’s on an upward curve, they provide as many of those options as possible in the 15 states in which they operate.

Please don’t ask me which ones are the anomalies because of those that I tested, all of them offered each of the payment options listed below:

  • Online Banking (Trustly)
  • VIP Preferred e-check
  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • Discover
  • PayPal
  • BetRivers Play+
  • Venmo
  • Vanilla Direct

As ever, depositing money is infinitely quicker than receiving it – think of how easy it is to pay for an insurance policy but much slower it is to receive any payout – but, again, BetRivers offer several options of which some are quicker than others, so you have the option to pick and choose.

Withdrawing Funds

To be fair to BetRivers, their withdrawal options and times are among the best I’ve tested. They offer one of the widest range of withdrawal methods and to make it better still, they don’t charge any withdrawal fees (in line with the big sportsbooks), although that’s not to say you won’t get charged by your particular payment method of choice. Always check first! But best of all, my testing concluded that, overall, based on the options offered, BetRivers are among the fastest out there. Let’s take a closer look…

Sports Markets

Football, Basketball, Ice Hockey, Baseball, Soccer, Tennis, Golf, UFC/MMA, Motorsports, Formula 1, Aussie Rules, Bowling, Boxing, Cricket, Cycling, Darts, Handball, Volleyball, Lacrosse, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Snooker.

BetRivers offer pretty much what you would expect them to offer, with nothing particularly niche but also nothing missing that you would expect to see. I’m not expecting there to be too many cricket aficionado in deepest Virginia, but if there are, there are plenty of markets on offer!

In addition to the above, at the time of writing this review, they were also offering a futures bet for the 2024 Paris Olympics medal table, so I’m expecting them to go big on that when the games finally arrive.

Worth noting too is that the list is state specific and some of the specials relate to the teams in that area. While, overall, it’s not the most exhaustive list out there, there is enough here to satisfy most sports bettors.

BetRivers Sportsbook App

Available on both iOS and Android.

I’ll not mess about with his one … what the good people of BetRivers offer in terms of their apps is absolutely fine and ticks all of the main boxes:

  • Easy to navigate ✔️
  • Responsive ✔️
  • Easy on the eye ✔️
  • Smooth ✔️

Not for the first time, a sportsbook has produced an app that is several steps up on their desktop offering.

They make it nice and easy for their users to navigate around by offering a horizontal menu that highlights the main sports, the live events, the specials, and more, and so it is simple to find the sports and events that you are looking for.

There is also a menu button that opens up a vertical menu, where an exhaustive list of all the sports, events and bets are available.

In terms of making your selections, simply click onto the sport of your choice and are immediately offered all of the lines available for the upcoming games, and away you go! There’s also tabs for live games and future bets – standard stuff really but some do it better than others and, for me, BetRivers have got it about right and have managed to find that tricky balance between tacky and easy-on-the-eye.

The Android app only scores 3.5 out of 5 but most of the complaints are around the betting itself rather than the app’s functionality and the 4.4 out of 5 they receive on the Apple app is a fairer reflection.

Promotions

Unsurprisingly, BetRivers have a decent set of promos available at any given time, albeit it’s an ever-moving feast, so what I’m going to show you below is what they had on offer at the time of this review. Please make sure you check them out and don’t rely just on my say so. Cheers.

If I’m being honest, the desktop site is such that the promos are not too easy to locate. If you look closely enough there is a rotating banner near the top of the page that flashes up their offerings on that particular day and down the right side, they have what they call their promotions ‘lobby’, which offers a clickable link for more promos.

All a bit messy and confusing but if you can find them, there are some promos there, so, let’s have a closer look:

Up to a $500 Bonus Bet – New User

First up, the new user bonus bet, which is as simple as they come. Just place your first real money sports bet on BetRivers at whatever odds you wish  – no minimum – and if your wager loses you automatically receive a bonus bet equal to your stake of up to $500.

How BetRivers have ‘sold’ the bet is 100 percent accurate, but the $500 is only an actual thing if you have $500 to bet with in the first place. But still … whichever way you look at it, it’s a free bet.

image 20

The bonus bet will be loaded within 24 hours of your first qualifying wager being settled and will expire 30 days later. Just be aware that when we’re talking about qualifying wagers, we’re not talking about their bets that fall under their Profit Boost or Odds Boost categories.

But once you have your bonus bet loaded on your account, it can be used on any sports offering  that falls within regular sportsbook wagering limits. Just be aware that the payout on a bonus bet is different to a traditional cash bet in that the payout is profit only, and doesn’t include a returned stake.

NCAAF Bowl Game Frenzy

As you can see, this one was a topical promo, offering bettors plenty of value as the College Football Bowl season was about to kick off. Nothing fancy … just enhanced odds for a selected few games, but it qualifies as a promo, so you’re going to hear about it 😊

image 21

The enhanced odds are not massively enhanced but if you look hard enough you will find some value, which is what we’re all about.

NHL SGP Bet & Get

This is essentially the same as the promo above but is for NHL games. ‘Bet and Get’ suggests a bonus code is required in order to claim your bonus – but from my experience, all it involved were some enhanced odds for some selected games.

image 22

The SGP offers a clue to the bets that are included in the promo, with same game parlays forming part of their offer.

Profit Boost Surprise

This one is a bit different, and the clue is in the word ‘surprise’. Essentially, BetRivers are trying to entice their existing customers to log in every day because each day there is a surprise boost awaiting them.

image 23

From experience, these surprises were in the form of boosted odds for selected events, but I’m guessing that when they say surprise they mean it and it therefore could come in other forms. Who knows?

World’s Fastest Ball Sport promo

Ever heard of Jal-Alai? Well, if you haven’t the good people of BetRivers have given you a clue – i.e. the world’s fastest ball sport – and are also giving you the chance to bet on it!

image 24

Quite where the bets appear I’m not sure – funnily enough Jal Alai didn’t appear in their lists of sports – but it’s there somewhere and offers bettor something a little different.

House Specials

Nothing complicated here … just a selected bunch of bets from a specially selected events that offer value for the bettors.

image 25

To give you a flavor of what they offer, on the day of this review they offered some soccer specials for the English Premier League and the Saudi Pro League, as well as some for College Basketball.

Betting Options

BetRivers, as you would expect, offer their customers the usual betting go-to’s but also have a couple of tricks up their sleeve. Al in all, they offer a range that competes with the best of the best, and what I’m really trying to say is that there is nothing ‘missing’. If it’s good and you can find it elsewhere, you’ll probably be able to find it here. And if that makes no sense, let me instead take you through BetRivers’ options.

Cash Out and Early Payout

Simple stuff really and does what it says on the tin. Basically, if you place a wager, you have the option of cashing out your bet when the when the game or event is in play.

The downside, of course, is that is you cash out early you will not receive the full amount of your winnings if the game/event had played out in its entirety. Depending on how early you cash out will affect the reduced odds that you will receive for your winning bet. It’s a risk/reward judgement call on your part.

Interestingly, among the promos that BetRivers sometimes offer – albeit not at the time of this review – is the one where you are entitled to an early payout if the team that you have bet on leads in the game by a certain number of points or goals. Very similar to cash out, but is part of the initial bet. Keep an eye out for these.

Odds Boosts

We know them as ‘odds boosts’ but BetRivers prefer to call them ‘House Specials’, which is where, on a daily basis, they will give improved odds on a range of between 5 and 15 specially selected bets, most of which have odds of +200 or higher.

Unlike other sportsbook – like FanDuel for example – they annoyingly don’t show you what the odds were prior to the boost, so we have to take their word for it, but among them are usually several value bets.

Live Betting Markets

As you would expect, BetRivers also offer live betting – a must-have for any respectable sportsbook in 2024 – and they do it in style.

On any given game day there are loads on offer, which can easily be identified by the ‘LIVE’ icon next to the sports listed down the left side of the desktop page. On the app there is a ‘LIVE’ tab.

And away you go!

For many of the ‘live betting’ sports they also offer a live stream, which I think we can all agree adds an extra edge to your betting

Standard Bet Types

In addition to all of the above, BetRivers also offer the bread-and-butter bets and, again, there is nothing not to like. They are…

  • Moneylines
  • Point Spreads
  • Totals (Over/Under)
  • Futures
  • Win Totals
  • Parlays
  • Team Props
  • Player Props
  • Game Props
  • Handicap bets

Customer Reward Scheme

Now we’re talking. This is where BetRivers come into their own and where it helps being a part of a wider organization that already possess a stellar loyalty reward program for their casino customers..

In their words, their program is all about “fair and generous ways” to give their players “exactly what they deserve”. I’ll let you decide if they stay true to their word but what I will say is, compared to the rewards schemes of most of the other top sportsbooks, this compares favorably. And, better still, it’s actually not that difficult to understand or be part of.

So… every real money bet a customer places with BetRivers will earn them both what are known as Loyalty Level Points and Bonus Store Points. Basically, the Loyalty Level Points are there to help you increase your ‘loyalty level’ and the Bonus Store Points are there to be used to purchase rewards in their ‘bonus store’.

The idea is that the customer reaps the benefits of the Loyalty Level they have achieved by climbing the loyalty levels and unlocking additional bonuses in the Bonus Store. The higher the level, the more generous the reward.

Among the rewards available are bonus funds, in-person benefits (free casino credits, dining offers, discounted accommodation, and VIP services), retail gifts (hats, T-shirts, mugs etc), higher withdrawal limits, free bets,

It looks like this…

BetRivers Customer Support

This is an interesting one. Depending on which state you are in, this is either a three-dimensional or four-dimensional option. Either way, what they offer is a quality level of customer support.

In a nutshell, what they try and do is funnel all of their customers with queries through their live online chat service rather than offer them the plethora of options offered by others – live, chat, telephone helpline, email, snail mail etc.

There is also a hotline – Phone Number: 1(800)613-1564 – but the key here is that their live chat facility is excellent, or at least it was in my experience, and is available 24/7. Any wait was only a short one and when you get to chat to someone – after being given the list of available options by a bot – you’re treated to some old-fashioned politeness and efficiency.

I know … weird, right?

Some, but not all, states offer their customers an online Contact Form, but given how efficient the live chat facility is, I would recommend that every time.

The page looks like this (box on the left):

image 27

They also offer a very good FAQ page, which answers all of the obvious and many of the not-so-obvious questions.

image 28

They also are contactable through their X (formerly Twitter) account, which is @BetRivers.

BetRivers Responsible Gambling

Typically, BetRivers take this very seriously. To not do so would be a bad good look when all of the other major sportsbooks go big on responsible gaming.

It gets the prominence it deserves and is highlighted on the taskbar at the very top of their desktop site:

image 29

One click takes you through to their Terms of Service where ad verbatim but based on which state your betting from, you will see something very similar to this:

3. RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING

3.1. You may self-regulate your use of the Services through any of two different methods: (i) BetRivers temporary self-suspension and limit-setting programs; and (ii) the [named state] Gaming Board Statewide Voluntary Self Exclusion Program.

3.2. BetRivers self-exclusion functionality allows you to completely exclude yourself from only BetRivers Services in [named state] for a period of three (3) days, seven (7) days, and thirty (30) days. In addition to and separate from the self-exclusion functionality, BetRivers.com allows you to set responsible gaming limits for the Services on BetRivers Services only, including deposit limits, spending limits, and time limits, and/or self-suspend your participation in wagering games offered through the Services for a designated time period of at least seventy-two (72) hours (a “Cool-Off Period”) as detailed.

3.3 The [named state] Voluntary Self Exclusion Program enables individuals to self-exclude from all internet (mobile) sports wagering.

3.4. While you remain on any of the self-exclusion lists described in sections 3.2 & 3.3 above, we will also not be allowed to send you any marketing communications with respect to the Services.

3.5. Not valid for any participant of the [named state] Gaming Board Statewide Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program. Must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537).

3.6. Additional resources can be found by contacting:

a. The National Council on Problem Gambling – www.ncpgambling.org or 1-800-522-4700
b. US Suicide Prevention Organization: https://988lifeline.org/ or call/text/chat 988

But there’s more. The website for some (not all) states goes a step further and provides a separate section on the Responsible Gaming page called ‘Player Protection’. The one that pertains to bettors in Virginia is reproduced ad verbatim below:

1.RESPONSIBLE GAMING

1.1. We are committed to make responsible gaming a priority and take this issue very seriously. While many are able to gamble responsibly, there is a small portion of the population who can develop a serious, sometimes uncontrollable gambling problem. This can affect persons of any age, income, gender or race at any time. To protect those that are vulnerable to gambling problems and others affected by their behavior, we have established policies and guidelines which deal with issues such as underage gambling and problem gambling as detailed on this page. We have additionally implemented employee education and training programs, and detailed written procedures, to help our employees identify and assist in managing these issues.

1.2. PLEASE GAMBLE RESPONSIBLY. We offer the following tips to help you stay within safe limits, and avoid falling prey to common gambling myths:

1.2.1. Gambling is never a solution to any problem. Gambling should always be for entertainment purposes only.

1.2.2. You can never rely on or expect gambling winnings for any reason. Never gamble with more money than you can afford to lose.

1.2.3. Never use gambling as a coping mechanism. If you are suffering from anxiety, depression, anger, sadness, any heightened emotional state, or any professional or personal problems, do not gamble.

1.2.4. Always set time and money limits before you start to gamble, and adhere to those limits. Never believe that increasing your bets or gambling longer will improve your odds of winning or recovering gambling losses.

1.2.5. Never give in to pressure to gamble by friends, colleagues, family, or others. If you do not feel comfortable gambling in general or in a particular situation, do not participate.

1.2.6. If you know that you have an addictive personality or suffer from any other addictions (drugs, alcohol, etc.), do not gamble.

1.3. You may set responsible gaming limits for the Services, including deposit limits, spending limits, and time limits, and/or self-suspend your participation in wagering games offered through the Services for a designated time period of at least 72 hours (a “Cool-Off Period”) as detailed at: https://va.betrivers.com/?page=my-account&subpage=responsible-gaming#resplimit-cooldown.

1.4. The Virginia Lottery’s Voluntary Exclusion Program allows you to self-exclude from certain legalized gambling in Virginia for a period of two years, five years or for a lifetime. More information regarding the Virginia Lottery’s Voluntary Exclusion Program can be found online at https://www.valottery.com/voluntaryexclusionprogram.

What BetRivers have to offer is pretty good, even though the configuration of their desktop site is a little muddled and overcrowded. Overall, it does the job and the mobile app makes up for the deficiencies of the desktop. The promos and offers are also pretty good and their rewards program, while not their own, is excellent. So, I’d recommend going mobile rather than betting from your desk but there’s still plenty to like about BetRivers.
