Fanatics Sportsbook Review

fanatics

Introduction

When you see and hear ‘Fanatics’ your first thought is probably sports apparel and the almost unique place they have in sports merchandising, but dig just a little bit deeper and you’ll find a sportsbook that is well on its way to being up there among the big players in the US.

They’re relatively new – they didn’t launch until January 2023 – but in the space of a year they have made their mark and now operate out of nine states with more to come very soon.

Given that they were already a household name even before they decided to branch out into sports betting, it’s no big surprise that their arrival on the scene has been far from conventional. In fact, they leveraged their way into the sports betting market by offering free replica shirts to their new customers. If you’re Fanatics, why wouldn’t you!

Their official launch came inside the stadium of the Washington Commanders, FedExField, on January 20, 2023, and in doing so they became the first sportsbook to  operate inside an NFL stadium.

Along the way, they have hired some experienced high-level personnel from other big-named sportsbooks – like Matt King, former CEO of FanDuel – and are doing everything in their considerable power to go big quickly.

As part of this super-quick expansion, they purchased PointsBet and so have been able to tap into infrastructure that was already in place, hence their ability to move at such speed.

As a result, they have produced something that is pretty good but not perfect. If you’re still with me, let me tell you what I think…

Fanatics State Availability

Their offering may be modest at the moment but in the days and weeks to come their current range of nine states will be expanding. Their plan is to be massive and by massive I mean have a presence in all 26 US states where betting is legal.

Better still, they have the geo-tech in place to allow you to seamlessly flit between states – at least those that have betting licenses – and still be logged in and able to bet without interruption. This is one of the biggest wins of taking over the PointsBet infrastructure.

As mentioned above, the list of legal Fanatics states will continue to grow in the coming months and years but for now they are…

  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Ohio
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia

Sign Up Process

Okay, so you’ve done your research and have decided that Fanatics is for you … but you don’t have an account. How easy is it to set up an account?

Well, the answer is fairly simple but, this is Fanatics and so, as ever, it is a little bit different to almost every other sportsbook you’ve ever come across. For starters, there is no desktop site – and from my research, there don’t appear to be any immediate plans to have one – so the sign up process has to be done on your cell, which is fine as long as you have all the stuff you need handy, like proof of address, national security card etc.

Okay, so, step-by-step … let’s go:

1. Go to the app store for either the App Store (iOS) or the Google Play Store (Android) and find and download the ‘BetFanatics Sportsbook App’. Found it? Right, then click on ‘Download’ to install the app on your phone or device.

2. Launch the app by locating the BetFanatics icon on your device and tap it to open, where you will initially be asked that familiar question … for permission to track your activity across other websites and apps. Choose either ‘Allow’ or ‘Don’t Allow’ .. it’s up to you.

3. Another familiar question … that one about enabling location tracking, but in this instance it’s actually quite important as to comply with legal betting regs, your precise location has to be tracked. You get the choice to ‘Allow Once,’ ‘Allow While Using the App,’ or ‘Don’t Allow’, but to disable it would be daft because it will prevent you from placing bets. Basically, by clicking ‘allow’ you are telling Fanatics where you are and if where you are is in one of their legal betting states. There’s no duping the system though … the geo-tech knows if you’re trying to play them.

4. This is where you get the chance to set your notification preferences and where you can customize your betting experience. Simply click on which particular notifications, if any, you’d like to receive from Fanatics, like offers, updates, and/or betting news. The choice is yours. If, like me, you prefer to go your own way, you disable the whole lot!

image 17

5. You’re finally in a position to sign up and you do it by hitting the ‘Join’ button. From there you are asked to create your own unique  Fanatics ID, enter your email address and then create a secure password.

6. As an added extra level of security, if your device permits you to use Face ID then select ‘Allow’, which is perfect if you need to login in a hurry to get your bet on before the race/game starts.

7. Now we’re onto the basics – your personal information. You’ll be asked for the following:

  • Name (which must match your ID).
  • Date of birth.
  • Phone number (for account verification and security).
  • Address (which must also match your ID).
  • Last four digits of your social security number confirmation.

8. Nearly there! You now get the chance to review all of the info you have input and, if you’re happy with them, click to accept Fanatics’ Ts & Cs.

9. Finally… confirm that you are 21 or over and that you are legally permitted to place a bet – and why wouldn’t you be? – and you’re there. Just click “Submit” and your Fanatics setup is complete!.

This was fine and took less than 20 minutes. It was about as straightforward as it can possibly be while still ticking all the right, legal boxes.

Payment Options

Fanatics’ desire to make their betting experience as user-friendly as possible extends to the deposit and withdrawals methods they offer, albeit with one very obvious exception – credit cards, which may be available as an option further down the line.

One of Fanatics’ big wins from a bettor’s perspective is that its minimum deposit is just $5 – lower than almost all of their rivals – and there is no formal upper limit. And, in this case like most of their major rivals, all transactions are free.

What’s not to like?

To deposit funds is as easy as it gets. Just tap on the account icon, select ‘Deposit’ and then browse the list of available options, which are…

  • Debit Card
  • Apple Pay
  • PayPal
  • Venmo
  • ACH (Bank Transfer)
  • Wire Transfer

As ever, as in life itself, to deposit or pay money is infinitely easier than to receive or withdraw it, and sports betting is no different. But, to be fair to Fanatics, they have made it about as easy as they can, and while they may not offer as many options as some of their rivals, they have not done a bad job.

Withdrawing Funds

As part of their quest to be customer-friendly and one step ahead of their rivals, Fanatics are generally quite quick to process requests for payouts. The debit card appears the most solid, reliable option but e-wallet or ACH payments are available too.

One thing I particularly like is that their withdrawal limit is just $1, which may seem insignificant to some, but for the small-time bettor – those who we love at BonusBetUSA – a lower limit than the usual $10 or $20 is useful. As a small-time gambler myself, that was a welcome addition.  It’s not all about the pros.

Another thing to note here is that Fanatics have set up a tracker so that bettors can be constantly updated on how far down the line their withdrawal is. Think the Amazon parcel tracker but for money … good right?

Anyway… the full list and their nominal processing times are as follows:

Withdrawal MethodProcessing Time
Debit card1-3 business days
ACH (Bank Transfer)2-3 business days
PayPal1-5 business days
Venmo1-5 business days
Wire TransferWithin 24 hours
Paper Check7-10 business days

Not a huge array of options but the ones they have are solid and reliable and their payout times compare with the best of them. And I love the $1 limit.

Sports Markets

Baseball, Basketball (NBA, WNBA, NCAAB), Football (NFL, NCAAF, CFL), Golf, Ice Hockey (NBA, NCAAH), UFC/MMA, Motor Sports, Soccer, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball.

Not the most exhaustive list by any means but you get the feeling Fanatics, at this stage of their development, are going for quality over quantity. And have achieved it. The above list is what was available for bettors in Maryland at the time of this review but research has shown this to be a pretty consistent list across all of the states they cover, although a couple did also include Aussie Rules and Lacrosse..

Those looking for what are considered, in US terms, more niche sports – like rugby, cricket, cycling, darts and snooker – may be disappointed but they offer plenty of markets for the traditional sports, which for most US bettors is fine. And let’s not forget, the sports listed are at a snapshot in time and is an ever-moving feast. As Fanatics grows, so too will the number of sports they cover.

An okay selection if you’re happy to bet on the major US sports. Those who bet on niche sports may be a little underwhelmed.

Fanatics Sportsbook App

Available on both iOS and Android.

Given that Fanatics have directed all of their resources towards a quality app at the expense of having a desktop site, you’d expect it to be pretty good. And guess what .. it is!

As you can see below, what they have produced is eye-catching while remaining classy, with the basic template being white graphics against a black background. So, aesthetically, it delivers, but what about the functionality?

Well, that works too. It’s very simple to navigate around and even easier to select your betting sport of choice by scrolling along a horizontal menu at the top of the screen.

Promotions

Fanatics have got this far by keeping it relatively low-key, which is no bad thing, and their promos follow a similar pattern. Other than their new-user promo, which we will come onto in a bit, they offer just a couple more, which we’ll take a closer look at.

But we’ll start with the Bonus Bet promo for new users…

Fanatics Sportsbook Promo – New Users

This one is for new customers who get to generate $200 worth of Fancash (we’ll come onto that in a bit) by creating a Fanatics account and placing a $10 bet on any of the markets on offer. There is nothing to specifically sign up for here – it’s automatic.

Once you have placed your $10 bet you will be credited with a $40 bonus bet, which has what they describe as a 1x rollover requirement. The receipt of the bonus bet will not depend on you winning the bet – you will receive it regardless.

In order to draw down the $200 worth of bonus funds, you then have to bet on each of the next four days – following the exact same process – and each time you will be rewarded, regardless of the outcome of your bet, with a $40 bonus bet. And even with my rudimentary math skills, that equates to $200.

FanCash

Okay, so I’ve mentioned FanCash. But what the hell is it?

Well, in their own words… “FanCash is ‘The Currency of Sport’ that is exclusively available as a reward to Fanatics Sportsbook bettors. It is earned when Fanatics Sportsbook bettors place a qualifying cash bet on Fanatics Sportsbook.”

What they are actually saying is that every time a bettor places a bet at Fanatics they  will be rewarded with:

  • 1% back in FanCash on straight bets
  • 3% on standard parlays and
  • 5% on same-game parlays

All of the above happen regardless of whether or not it is a winning bet (bets that are voided or ‘no action’ do not produce FanCash), and FanCash can be converted to bonus bet credits at a rate of one-to-one, or can be used, in true Fanatics style, to purchase items listed of merchandise on their website.

Daily Bonus Bets

This is good and does exactly what it says on the tin. It offers existing customers bonus bets on a daily basis!

And the best thing of all is that they are tailored specifically to the bettor based on their existing betting record. And they come in different forms. They can be bonus bets, bet boosts or any number of different but relevant offers.

Better still, they are easy to access. Just click on the ‘Promos’ tab and all of your daily offers are there for you to browse. Just simply tap ‘Opt-in’ an away you go. Nothing whatsoever not to like.

The app will also highlight personalized bets that, again, are relevant to the customer’s betting record and may be of interest to him/her given what they have betted on in the recent past. This customized experience is something unique (at the moment) to Fanatics.

Referral Bonus

This is not a betting promo in the truest sense of the word, but they don’t have too many, so is worth including.

Basically, if you are a registered customer of Fanatics and you refer a friend to their sportsbook you can earn $50 in FanCash.

It’s not rocket science. The ‘friend’ has to click on the unique referral link, download the app, register for a new account, verify their identity, deposit at least $10, place a bet, and when the bet is settled, you and your friend are both awarded $50 of FanCash.

Clearly, there are not loads of these and they have again gone for quality over quantity, but what they offer is fine. Nothing more. Just fine.

Betting Options

There are certain must-haves than any self-respecting sportsbook will offer their customers, and Fanatics are no exception to this rule. All of the basics are covered, and with some style. There are no surprises or special innovations but what they do, they do well.

Here’s a guide:

Live Betting Markets

Unsurprisingly, live betting forms part of the Fanatics’ offering, and they do it well. If an ongoing event is marked as ‘LIVE’ then you’re in business and you can bet on the race/game/match as it unfolds.

Most of the sports covered by Fanatics are available for live betting, which are assisted by an array of live stats and updates to help users make informed decisions.

For certain events, something really special is offer for their live betting, which brings me on to…

Live Streaming

For several years, live streaming has been part of the service provided by the major sportsbooks, but more often than not those live streams that run alongside live betting have been from what, in US terms, are deemed secondary sports, like European basketball, pro tennis or La Liga soccer. The problem has always been the time lag on a live stream, which historically can be anywhere between eight seconds to a minute.

But times are changing and Fanatics (and Caesars) have done something fantastic and have tapped into what in live streaming terms is the Holy Grail – the NFL.

Fanatics have brokered a deal with Genius Sports – a sports data company partnered with the NFL – to use a product called BetVision, which enables the games to be streamed with a time lag of between only three to seven seconds. In live betting terms, that’s a game changer.

There are loads of caveats of course – when aren’t there? – including the fact they are only available in the states where Fanatics offer legal betting but for the lucky few it’s a brilliant feature.

Just remember, in order to stream a game you will have to have placed a wager on it, albeit for a minimum of just 10 cents.

Cashout

Fanatics do ‘cash out’ but are not as big on this as some of their big rivals. They only offer a limited amount of markets, so always make sure before you place your wager if that particular market supports cash out.

In their words: “Cash Out is not currently available on all markets. Fanatics Sportsbook will endeavor to signpost the markets that support Cash Out”.

So, basically, it is there, but not everywhere, so check before you bet.

***

In addition to all of the above, Fanatics do all of the bread-and-butter stuff. And in case you’re wonder what the bread-and-butter entails…

  • Moneylines
  • Spreads
  • Totals (Over/Under)
  • Props
  • Parlays
  • Same Game Parlays
  • Round Robins
  • Alternate Lines
  • Teasers
  • Futures

Customer Reward Scheme

We’ve kind of already covered this under promos because FanCash qualifies as both a promotion and a loyalty scheme.

Having already talked about it, I’ll not bore you with it all again other than to say it’s a pretty good scheme, self-named as ‘The Currency of Sport’, which essentially offers cashback – or should I say FanCash – in return for your bets at 1%, 3% or 5% depending on the type of bet you have placed.

These ‘cashback’ sums accumulate and you have the chance to convert them to either bonus bets of items of merchandise.

I’ve said enough … you know what I’m saying.

Fanatics Customer Support

As you would expect from a company that has good customer care at its core, Fanatics offer the same level of support to their sportsbook customers.

They offer their help via multiple channels, including live chat, email, and a very good FAQ section, although if you’re looking for a phone helpline, you may have a long, fruitless search.

The customer support page looks very much like this…

image 18

For me, the live chat is by far the best and is the most popular choice for good reason. It’s available 24/7 and, from my experience was quick, easy-to-use and efficient. The ability to speak with someone in real time is priceless if your query needs an immediate resolution.

Having said that, for details that are more complex, the email support may be the route to take, and while it inevitably takes longer the feedback I have had from others is that they are still speedy and efficient. Nothing not to like really.

For generic queries, then look no further than their FAQ section, which is as comprehensive as any of the sportsbooks that I have reviewed. Better still, if the answer is not there, you are prompted to dive straight into a live chat.

There’s no two ways about it, Fanatics do things differently and are proud of it. As providers of merchandise and apparel, their route into this crowded market was always going to be unconventional but rather than run with the crowd, they have embraced those differences and made the most of them. And I like that. While there is currently no desktop site, the app is very well designed and its functionality is really good, but their crowning glory is the live betting which, for the NFL bettors out there, offers the best live streaming service in the business. The only real downside I found was their relatively modest coverage across the US but, almost as we speak, other states are being added to their repertoire.
