FanDuel Sportsbook Review

Introduction

FanDuel is now, arguably, the top sports betting brand in the US but has its roots in, of all places, Edinburgh. Now though its HQ is in New York City and the company is jointly owned by Flutter Entertainment (77%), Fox Corporation (18%) and Boyd Gaming.

While originally created as a daily fantasy sports provider, it now also offers the sportsbook alongside horse racing and an online casino. It is now available in over 20 US states and in a relatively short time – founded in 2009 – has established itself as the standard by which most other US sports betting sites are measured.

FanDuel State Availability

Given their status as one of the big players in US sports betting, you’ll be unsurprised to learn that FanDuel is available in 24 states, albeit three of those – Nevada, Washington and Mississippi – only offer retail betting.

But if you are in one of the other 21 and are registered with FanDuel then you are good to go. Be careful though … if you cross a state line into one that is not listed below then you will be prohibited from placing a bet. Also worth noting is that in Maryland and Louisiana, there are some parishes that still prohibit online betting. Always check!

If you are not registered but want to join, signing up is a relatively straightforward process – we will come onto that in a bit – but it is worth noting that sign-up offers may differ from state to state.

The list of legal FanDuel states (below) will continue to grow in the coming months and years as more states legalize and develop their betting industry.

Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming.

Sign Up Process

So, you’ve decided  FanDuel is the site for you – or one of them – but you don’t have an account. What next? Well, you’ll be pleased to hear that, as mentioned earlier, it is a fairly straightforward process. But you will need some stuff, and by stuff I mean documents, to prove that you are who you say you are.

But once you have all of that ready, then it doesn’t take too long. What you’ll initially need to know (and need to have) is the following:

  • Full Name
  • Address
  • Email Address
  • Date of Birth
  • Social Security Number (Last four digits)
  • Username
  • Password

Once the above form has been submitted, and after you have agreed the terms and conditions, you receive a confirmation email that tells you the initial verification process is complete.

So far so good.

To start betting you need to sign in and deposit funds but this is where it gets a bit trickier. Only a bit though… it’s fine. When/if you win and are ready to withdraw finds, what is known as the KYC (Know Your Customer) process kicks in, and this requires certain documents to be uploaded to your account. But what counts as a KYC document?

Well, usually a driver’s license or state ID will suffice but there are other options…

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid State ID
  • Voter ID Card
  • University ID Card
  • Mortgage Statement
  • Bank Statement
  • Passport
  • Birth Certificate

Account Verification

All of the above is mandatory because FanDuel, and all of the other US sportsbooks, are required by state law to have in place a rigorous KYC and bettor ID verification process. This process needs to be robust in order to prevent the obvious stuff, like fraud prevention and identity theft, but also other online crimes like money laundering.

It takes a bit of prep – we can’t deny that – and also a bit of patience, but FanDuel have made it reasonably bettor-friendly and it’s a thorough process for a reason, so it could be worse.

Payment Options

First thing to say is that while most FanDuel payment methods are available across the board, some are state specific, so it’s important to check on the options available where you are before placing your bets. On a more positive note, in general the options offered by FanDuel are good and varied and include the ever-popular e-wallets provided by PayPal and Venmo, as well as the usual major debit and prepaid cards.

Typically, depositing money is an almost instant process while withdrawing is an altogether different story. Talking of which…

Withdrawing Funds

As with most online sportsbooks, FanDuel have an initial internal review process that delay payouts from being instant, which typically takes between 3 to 5 days to complete, but in the table below we have tried to be more specific. From personal and anecdotal experience, most payments are made well within the 5-day limit.

The clear winners here are Paypal and Venmo have who boast a 24-hour turnaround (after the internal review) but Debit Cards and FanDuel’s own prepaid card also claim the same 24-hour turnaround time.

Withdrawal Method Processing Time
Online Banking  3-5 business days (after internal review)
PayPal Up to 24 hours (after internal review)
Venmo Up to 24 hours (after internal review)
Debit Card Up to 24 hours (after internal review)
FanDuel Prepaid Play+ Up to 24 hours (after internal review)
Check (by Mail) 7-10 business days (after internal review)
Cash at Counter (Retail only) Within one hour

With several options available and a payout process that is fairly smooth and efficient, FanDuel is definitely up there with the best of them. Plus there is the added bonus of there being no withdrawal fees and no less than four options that aim to pay in ‘up to 24 hours’. In summary, there is a lot to like here when compared to some of the other big players.

Sports Markets

Aussie Rules, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Cycling, Darts, Football, Golf, Horse Racing, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse. MMA, Motorsport, NFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball.

A good variety of sports are on offer at FanDuel with most tastes catered for even outside of the obvious and the popular. Even those who fancy a bet on Table Tennis have that opportunity – but not in all states. Again, the sports on offer vary from state to state as per state legislation and taste – so please check what’s available where you are. We’d hate for you to be disappointed.

FanDuel Sportsbook App

Available on both iOS and Android

Let’s not mess about, the FanDuel Sportsbook & Casino app is one of the best out there, if not the best.

If you don’t believe us, check out the 1.2 million+ reviews on the Apple App Store where it currently has a score of 4.8 out of 5, which makes it not only one of the best sportsbook apps but one of the highest-scoring apps full stop.

As ever, even with a 4.8 out of 5 score there are a few complaints but from our own experiences it’s an app that does all that it says on the tin and a bit more. Unlike some of its rivals – we’re looking at you Bet MGM – there are no problems with logging on and betting in different states, with the geolocation service working perfectly for both iOS and Android.

It may sound a bit too good to be true, but the design and functionality is also really good, with the ability to flip between the Sportsbook and the Casino as easy as you like, along with a user-friendly multi-parlay builder that ticks all the boxes.

Promotions

This is the fun bit and, to be fair to FanDuel, they do fun fairly well. At the time of this review there were no less than a dozen different promotions across their platform, which pretty much covers – *cliché klaxon* – ‘something for everyone’.

So, to give you an idea of what they have on offer:

New Customer – NBA Bet $5 Bet $150 Bonus Bet

image 15

There’s nothing too fancy about this one (and at odds of +3000 it‘s never going to be a gimme) but for new bettors who have just signed up this very much falls in the ‘nothing to lose’ category.

Basically, once you have deposited the minimum of $10 in your account and placed a single Moneyline wager of $5 or more, then if it comes in you win! It’s available in most states covered by FanDuel but, as ever, double-check the small print because here, if you’re in Louisiana, nine of its 64 parishes still prohibit online gambling. That, of course, applies to all offers and bets.

Parlay Profit Boost

image 14

Again, nothing too elaborate but at the time of writing, you can claim a parlay profit boost when betting on College Football, which can level up your winnings by up to 30%. While this particular offer runs from November 16th, 2023 through to November 18th, 2023, a promo of this type is almost always available from FanDuel and switches between different sports.

This type of offer is right up our street at BonusBetUSA.

NFL Quick Hits

image 4

Another one that pretty much does what it says on the tin and couldn’t be simpler if it tried. As I write the Baltimore Ravens are prepping to entertain the Cincinnati Bengals at the M&T Bank Stadium and FanDuel are offering what they call a ‘quick bet’ for ‘both teams to complete their first pass attempt’. For that pretty straightforward achievement by both QBs they offer -118 on the Moneyline. Not bad, right?

It goes without saying that, like all of their promos, there is a list of Ts&Cs as long as a Joe Burrow ‘Hail Mary’ but a different quick bet is on offer almost all of the time throughout the NFL season.

Reward Machine – $2000 in Casino Bonus

image

You’ve probably gathered by now that FanDuel do modest quite well when it comes to their promos and compared to some of their rivals – we’re looking at you again BetMGM – they keep it simple, which to be honest we’re pretty cool with. But if you’re looking here for an 8-Bit Barry retro video-type game here you’re going to be disappointed.

This casino bonus is as simple as you like. Just login to your account, hop across to the Casino, find the Reward Machine™ game and each day there are three free spins waiting for you. There are three ways to win – 1) Match three symbols for an instant win, 2) Collect symbols throughout the week to earn rewards, and 3) Collect three trophies in one week to earn the $2000 bonus. Simple right?

Gridiron – Shuffle‘Em

image 1

This is fun. Not much chance of winning the big bucks but fun nonetheless and is based on you picking up a ransom selection of prop bets for the NFL game of the day. And it’s free!

So, at the start of each day’s eligible game, once you’ve logged in head to the  ‘Shuffle’Em” Contest in the ‘Free to Play’ section. Once there you will be given a virtual card which will have three random props for a game of the day.

You may like the three you’ve been given, you may not, but you then have the chance to shuffle that selection up to five times until you find a combination you’re happy with. If, big if, all of your props come in during or after the game you win a share of the prize pot, which can be up to $25,000.

Betting Options

Compared to some of their rivals, FanDuel keep it simple, and for us at BonusBetUSA.com that’s no bad thing. Sometimes less is more and in FanDuel’s case that works.

This is no waltz thorough the glitz and glamor of a lurid Las Vegas casino, but more a calm stroll down a pleasant tree-lined avenue where you can place a bet of your choosing in a time of your choosing. No pressure.

That’s not to say there aren’t a few different betting options on offer because there are, and just to prove it…

Same Game Parlay+ (SGP+)

We like these. The chance of winning big within minimal outlay and all wrapped up in the same game ticks all of the boxes, right?

For those that don’t know – and you probably do – SGPs, as we like to call them, are accumulated bets where you pick a number of events (props) to occur in a game (NFL, Ice Hockey, Basketball or Soccer) and if they all happen, you win! It sounds simple but, of course, it’s not, but it is fun – which is what we want betting to be all about.

For example, you could tie into a single in-game parlay, the number of rushing yards, the number of completed passes, and the number of turnovers, and if you’re good enough to call all three correctly you could win big.

The process is simple on FanFuel where you are given numerous options to put your parlay together by a series of single clicks, with your bet being made up of a minimum of two selections. They even tell you how much you could win.

In their own words, this is how you put together a SGP:

  • Find your game

Go to your game’s page and tap the “Same Game Parlay” tab. Select 2 or more wagers to build your SGP.

  • Build your bet slip

The wagers you select will be added to your bet slip as “legs” in the SGP. Once you’ve selected the bets you want, decide how much to wager.

Note: Like any other parlay, we’ll calculate the odds and show you exactly how much you’ll win if all the legs in the parlay hit!

  • Watch the action

You can track the outcome of your SGP live in the My Bets “Active Bets” tab.

Note: Markets that are SGP-eligible will have the SGP icon next to them.

Sound simple? Well that’s because it is.

You may have noticed in the header of this section we also mention SGP+, but what’s the + all about?

In truth, it’s not that much different to a basic SGP but, to cut a long story short, until recently sportsbooks have restricted their customers to one same game parlay, but now they have opened it up to ‘combine multiple bets from the same game with more bets from other games in one parlay.’

Again, we’ll leave it to FanDuel to tell you how to build your SGP+:

  • Add more bets

Combine your initial SGP with SGP-eligible bets from different games. Note: Markets that are SGP+-eligible will have the SGP icon next to it.

  • Build your bet slip

The wagers you select will be added to your bet slip as “legs” in the SGP+. Once you’ve selected the bets you want, decide how much to wager.

  • Watch the action

You can track the outcome of your SGP+ live in the My Bets “active bets” tab.

Here’s an example of one that was live when we completed this review:

Cash Out

We’re not big fans of ‘cash out’ at BonusBetUSA.com for no other reason that we’re a bit old school, but it is a popular way to bet now and so almost all of the big sportsbooks offer this facility. FanDuel are no different.

For the few that don’t know, it basically offers you the chance to settle a wager early in order to lock in a profit (or a loss, but why would you normally cash out a loss!) without having to wait for an event to finish. It goes without saying that in order to do so, your odds are compromised and so by cashing out early you’ll not receive the full amount you would for a completed winning bet but that’s the call you have to make.

Cash out isn’t available on all bets – so always check before attempting to do so – but FanDuel make this nice and clear. In their words:

‘Open the Active Bets tab on your betslip. For any bet where Cash Out is available, you will see the green Cash Out button with the associated Cash Out value.’

And if you decide you would like to confirm your cash out:

‘When you click on the Cash Out button, you will be asked to confirm that you wish to Cash Out your bet.’

image 7

You may well ask, why would I want to cash out early? Well, here are a few examples:

  • To protect your winnings if you feel the current outcome may be about to change for the worse.
  • Because one leg of your multi-leg parlay is currently winning.
  • To minimize your loss if your wager looks certain to lose and you can at least cash out to reclaim your original stake.

Live Betting

Live betting, or ‘in-game betting, is popular with even us old schoolers and is another form of betting on FanDuel that does exactly what it says on the line. The action is ‘live’ and you’re free to bet on it. In a nutshell, while pre-game bets are completed before a game begins, live bets are placed during the action.

On FanDuel they make this nice and simple by offering a ‘Live Now’ button at the very top of their popular options which, if clicked, takes you to a page where the options and the sports available for live betting are listed. Next to each sport is a number in red that tells you how many live events are taking place’

image 11

Some sports are better suited to live betting than others, so it’s good to familiarize yourself with those that work best – for me, soccer, NFL and basketball work well –  but once you’re there in a game the options are laid out in front of you.

Live betting on FanDuel offers the usual array of bets – point spreads, Moneyline and totals – but also sometimes some additional specials and props are available. Be prepared for, sometimes, the odds to be suspended as they are being recalculated. That, I guess, is the nature of live betting.

What can make live betting doubly exciting is if FanDuel are showing a live stream of the game you’re betting on. Then you can watch the action in real time. Sometimes this is available, sometimes there’s just a game tracker with stats and other info that can help inform your bet.

Occasionally when live betting, if you’re sufficiently eagle-eyed, you may spot some too-good-to-be true odds, which are usually some rogue numbers that have made their way through the system. They’ll not be around for long, but if you’re quick enough, you could find some great value. We love it when that happens 😊

For us at BonusBetUSA, live betting is a joy. If you love betting and have more than a passable knowledge of sport, or a sport, then this could be very much for you.

Common Bet Types

FanDuel, of course, offer the basics of betting too – the bread and butter bets that we all love. So just for the sake of completeness, the following are available:

  • Moneylines
  • Spreads
  • Over / Unders
  • Parlays
  • Futures
  • Props

All of these are covered in our Ways to Bet section, so feel free to head there if you need a refresher.

Customer Reward Scheme

FanDuel offer rewards to loyal customers through a variety of ways, some of them specific to users of certain game and apps like FanDuel Faceoff and Reward Machine (as mentioned in Promotions). But for users of their sportsbook, the loyalty offer comes through TVG, or what is now known as FanDuel TV, which can be located on their home page.

We’ll let them explain:

‘One of our most popular promotions is our Wager Reward Points* promotion, in which Wager Rewards Points accumulate on your account as you place wagers on your account. This promotion was designed to provide a continuously compounding benefit for our customers as they wager on the TVG platform.

Please note: 1 Rewards Point will be issued for each whole dollar wagered on the account. For every 2,500 Rewards Points you earn, you will receive a wagering credit of $5, and for every 5,000 points you will receive a wagering credit of $10, and so on.

On the desktop site, you can opt-in, review, and redeem your rewards points by selecting the Promotions tab and then selecting Wager Rewards from the resulting drop-down menu.

Once on the Wager Rewards page, you will be able to see your Account’s accumulated points and redeem them for TVG wagering credits. If you have not opted into the Wager Rewards program you will be able to opt-in on this page.

If you are using a mobile device on the TVG mobile app, simply select More, then Wager Rewards.’

And that, essentially is it – a points- based reward system that gives you betting credits, which are automatically added to your account if you have opted in and can be redeemed via their ‘Promotions’ tab. Nothing too fancy, in line with FanDuel in general, but something that rewards its regulars.

FanDuel Customer Support

Well, they offer their customers a phone number, an email address, an FAQ section and a live chat facility, which is a good start and a step up on those – some of them big names – who don’t bother with the old-fashioned concept of talking to each other on the phone. They also offer a contact option through Facebook and X (once known as Twitter), and the good news is, all of those methods actually work, albeit at differing speeds.

As you would expect from a big player in the sports betting market, the good folk of FanDuel are busy and so, as a result, sometimes there is a bit of a wait – especially with the live chat – but when you are eventually dealt with, it’s usually a swift, efficient and painless experience.

In fairness, most of the common queries – ‘I’m having trouble verifying my account’ … ‘How do I reset my password?’ … ‘Problems with the geolocation check’ etc – are dealt with well in the FAQs, which are extensive once you click on your particular query, but it feels like FanDuel pay more than lip service to their customer queries and are genuinely trying to make betting with them a pain-free process.

In my personal experience, they have succeeded although a quick online search reveals that they have far from a 100% approval rating across the board. But, in general, their response times in all areas fall within the accepted industry standard so there’s not much here to get overly critical over.
