Online sports betting launched in Virginia in January 2021, and there are now 16 live sportsbook apps and sites in the state for VA bettors to choose from. The state’s legislature approved Gov. Ralph Northam’s amendments to two sports betting bills on April 22, 2020 and nine months later they launched.

In order to legally place an online sports bet in VA, bettors have to be at least 21 years of age and have a registered account with one of the 16 legal sportsbooks.

Sports Betting Winnings are Taxable in Virginia

Virginia’s approved sportsbooks pay tax at a flat rate of 15% of their adjusted gross sports betting revenue, and usually will recoup this money from their customers through either reduced odds or adjusted winnings.

For individual bettors, income from winnings from online sportsbooks is taxable at federal level, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires each person to report and pay tax on all of their gambling winnings, including amounts won by online sports betting. These sums are reported as “Other Income” on IRS Form 1040, with the rate an individual pays being based upon their annual earnings.

For individuals, tax is also payable on winnings at a state level. How much they pay is based on their annual income band:

IncomeTax Rate
$3,000 or less2%
$3,001-$5,000$60 plus 3% of excess over $3,000
$5,001-$17,000$120 plus 5% of excess over $5,000
$17,001 and higher$720 plus 5.75% of excess over $17,000

Who Regulates Virginia Sports Betting?

The Virginia Lottery is the body tasked with all the regulatory responsibilities for land-based casinos and internet sports betting. This includes its regulation, licensing, auditing, and compliance.

Can I Bet On Virginia College Sports Online?

No. Virginia does currently permit betting on collegiate sports played by teams from the state, regardless of whether they are playing at home or away. There is however a bill going through the state legislature that, if approved, will make this form of betting legal. This would not, however, cover prop betting on collegiate athletes from Virginia.

Can I Bet On E-Sports Online?

Yes, betting on E-Sports is legal in Virginia and can be undertaken by individuals who are 18 years old or over.

Responsible Gambling In Virginia

Bonus Bet USA supports Fun, Safe & Responsible Gambling. Head to our Responsible Gambling page for more information and links to resources which could be helpful. Gambling and sports betting are designed purely for fun and entertainment, but when they escalate to harmful levels, severe repercussions can follow. In essence, any gambling that negatively impacts your personal or work life constitutes problem gambling.

The notion of responsible gambling encourages secure, controlled, and lawful gambling experiences while reducing the potential harm to individuals, families, and society. The saying “too much of a good thing can be detrimental” is definitely applicable to gambling.

Signs of Problem Gambling

Several warning signs indicate problematic gambling behaviour, such as:

  • Frequently daydreaming about gambling or betting strategies
  • Increasing bets to achieve the thrill of excitement
  • Wagering money not designated for entertainment or money you cannot afford to lose
  • Feeling irritable, anxious, or annoyed when ceasing gambling activities
  • Engaging in illegal activities to support or fund gambling
  • Taking loans to finance gambling
  • Attempting to recover lost funds by placing larger bets
  • Deceiving friends, family, and colleagues about the extent of your gambling

However, the most significant and telling sign of excessive gambling is the inability to stop or reduce it despite attempts to do so. In addiction terminology, this is referred to as acting “without your own permission.”
